IREN's NVIDIA Status and Microsoft Win: Time to Buy or Hold the Stock?

4 min read

IREN Limited IREN has moved deeper into AI infrastructure after two credibility-building milestones. Recently, Microsoft accepted Horizon 1 at the Childress campus, while NVIDIA awarded IREN Exemplar Cloud status for its GB300 NVL72 deployment. Horizon 1 is the first of four 50MW deployments tied to IREN’s five-year, $9.7 billion Microsoft agreement, putting execution, not just contracted demand, at the center of the story.

The stock has responded to the improving business outlook, though performance across the AI infrastructure group has varied. IREN closed at $44.06 on Aug. 14 and rose about 16.7% in 2026, while Applied Digital Corporation APLD gained roughly 27.2%. CoreWeave, Inc. CRWV, helped by a post-earnings rally, gained 47%. AI infrastructure stocks remain volatile despite strong demand.

IREN now has stronger customer validation, a larger contracted revenue base and a broader cloud platform. The question is whether those gains already capture much of the near-term opportunity, especially with heavy capital needs and major delivery targets still ahead.

NVIDIA, Microsoft Shift the Debate Toward Execution for IREN

The latest milestones strengthen IREN’s case as more than a former Bitcoin miner moving into AI. NVIDIA’s Exemplar Cloud designation followed testing of the GB300 NVL72 deployment at Horizon 1, signaling that the system met NVIDIA’s standards for performance, reliability and scale. Microsoft’s acceptance is equally important because Horizon 1 is now a delivered asset under the $9.7 billion contract, with Horizons 2-4 still scheduled for 2026.

IREN’s broader commercial picture has also improved. In July, the company announced $2.8 billion of new contracts with AI developers and lifted its 2026 annualized recurring revenue target from $3.7 billion to more than $4 billion. About 85% of that target is now under contract, while the customer list includes Microsoft, NVIDIA, Perplexity and several AI software developers. The company also has a five-year, $3.4 billion AI cloud agreement with NVIDIA, giving it high-profile customers that can help finance and validate future deployments.

IREN’s Growth Is Expensive, Numbers Still Need to Catch Up

IREN’s earnings results still show a company in transition. Its third-quarter fiscal 2026 revenues fell to $144.8 million from $184.7 million sequentially as Bitcoin mining revenues declined, while AI cloud revenues rose to $33.6 million from $17.3 million. IREN reported a $247.8 million net loss, including sizable noncash mining-related impairments.

Funding remains an important part of the investment case. Management said roughly 95% of Microsoft-related GPU capital spending is expected to be funded through customer prepayments and GPU financing. This structure reduces some near-term pressure on IREN’s balance sheet, but the company still needs substantial capital to support its larger expansion plans.

Dilution is another factor to monitor. IREN’s share count has increased over the past year, and acquisitions such as Mirantis have added further equity issuance. The Mirantis deal broadens IREN’s software and cloud management capabilities, but investors will likely want evidence that those additions improve margins and customer retention over time.

IREN’s Estimates and Valuation

Estimates for IREN’s 2026 and 2027 earnings have been revised downward in the past 30 days. However, the company is expected to report a profit in the next year.

At the Aug. 14 close, IREN traded at about 4.52 times forward sales. This sits below Applied Digital’s roughly 8.85 times but well above CoreWeave’s roughly 2.34 times. It shows IREN is no longer priced like an early turnaround. Applied Digital and CoreWeave are also chasing the same broad AI infrastructure spending wave, so customer wins, financing terms and delivery speed will matter across all three.

IREN’s edge is its vertically integrated model and secured power footprint. The risk is that investors are already paying for smooth execution across a very large buildout. Like CoreWeave and Applied Digital, IREN must keep converting infrastructure spending into contracted, operating capacity rather than simply adding projects and capital commitments.

Valuation: P/S F12M

What Should Investors Do Now With IREN?

IREN’s Microsoft delivery and NVIDIA status make the AI cloud strategy more credible, while the higher 2026 revenue target supports a constructive long-term view. Still, the stock reflects substantial future success, and the company must convert contracted demand into revenues without letting capital intensity, dilution or project delays overwhelm returns.

With shares trading at a richer forward-sales multiple than CoreWeave but below Applied Digital, the risk-reward looks balanced. Existing investors may be best served by keeping current exposure steady and waiting for further Horizon deliveries, revenue conversion and financing progress before becoming more aggressive.

At present, IREN carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.
